Why Pursue Simplicity in Photography?

17 Sep

Before I go too far with this idea of taking simple pictures I need to clarify why I’m interested in simple pictures.

I often think that we need to look for more joy while pursuing less and while striving to make life less complicated … and I think this should also apply to photography.  I hope to portray something different from my other projects … more ordinary things … the simple images that are peaceful or calming … images that portray a little bit of solitude … images that slow us down and encourage us to think a little more.

I know that resources are limited.  The earth’s natural resources along with money, time, energy, and focus are finite resources.  The earth does not contain an infinite amount of any of them and we must learn to live with less.  I believe that we need more tranquility and mindfulness in our lives and less consumption of resources.

A simple life is a life where we have created the physical, emotional, and spiritual space necessary to live thoughtful lives and I think less complex pictures can remind us to think about a less complex future.

I love the shadows in this pic, have looked at it many times, contemplating what is the source of the shadows. Everytime I look I change my mind about the source, this time I am thinking trees.
