Dreaming

Sometimes I dream about only using my Olympus TG-5 WP, tiny 1/2.3 sensor pocket camera and making B&W images.  I used it to make the above image of three books/magazines that I am currently reading.  This is my second or third trip through each of them.  It is not obvious in this image, but two of these are exclusively printed in monochrome and one is mostly monochrome.

I like B&W images since I think they better show the tones and details and emotions and I find them more fun to process.  It is also easier to make B&W images rather than color with the TG-5 since it doesn’t always do an accurate job of getting the WB correct.  But, the main reasons I like B&W images is because the images remind me of the era when most images were in B&W.

When I think more about it, I realize that what I really like to do is use small cameras that don’t have long lenses protruding way out in front.  It doesn’t have to fit into a pocket.  Leica rangefinder cameras always intrigued me when I saw pictures of them since the lenses are small.  But, as time has gone by, I have developed a problem with the fingers on my right hand and I can’t grip a heavy rangefinder style camera with my fingertips anymore.  If I hold the camera using the tips of my fingers, they turn white and get numb.

Currently I am mostly using an Olympus E-M1 Mk II with zoom lenses since I don’t need to carry it far or hold it long and it performs well for photographing events or grabbing quickly to run outside to photograph a flower or the sky.  It does a great job, but it isn’t a style or type of camera that I prefer for walking about.  I still keep dreaming of finding the perfect lightweight rangefinder style camera with prime lenses.  I have the Olympus PEN-F since it uses the same lenses as the E-M1 Mk II, but I don’t like it as well due to its weight and controls.

Every camera is a compromise relative to size, weight, weather resistance, ergonomics, controls, image quality, etc.  I doubt that I will ever find one that I really like or want to shoot with exclusively; but I can dream.  In the meanwhile, I will continue to use my Olympus E-M1 Mk II and PEN-F, Leica D-LUX 6, and the Olympus TG-5 as I keep dreaming and searching for a camera that I love.
